10/2/2023 0 Comments Trickster definitionIn India, the great man-god Krishna, the most important of the avatars of the god Vishnu, constantly plays tricks – some of a sexual nature, as when he steals the clothes of his bathing. In the ancient Greek religion, Hermes, as a child, has trickster aspects, as, for instance, when he steals Apollo’s cattle. However, since it was first identified by Jung, the archetype has taken on a much broader definition and has become widely recognized by a variety of people. The Trickster archetype, also known as the Jester archetype, is one of the original from the Jungian list. If we can image it, we can then begin to establish some conscious relationship to it. The trickster is also often associated with wisdom, cunning, and laughter. We gain a provisional recognition of trickster energy when we personify it as coyote, fox, hare, imp, devil, Kokopelli, Murphy’s Law, and the like. In the place of something previously mentioned as a substitute or an equivalent: Having planned to drive, we walked instead. He can change shapes at will and, in that sense, is perhaps a mythological relative of the shaman. Often his inventiveness interferes with creation, however, and causes such realities as pain and death. Yet he often uses his inventiveness to help human beings and is sometimes, in effect, a culture hero. Weber suggested that in times of political or social unfolding we see an emergence of charismatic leaders but Thomassen (2013) suggest that Weber was unable to identify any charismatic leader who had a menacing agenda. He is immoral, or, at least, amoral, and he is, more often than not, a thief. The trickster is useful in illustrating liminal moments in history and how trickster logics are central to those moments. Typically male, the trickster usually has extreme appetites for food and sex. The trickster is a common character in mythology and in certain religious traditions, especially, but not exclusively the animistic – spirit-based – religions of Africa and Native North America.
